Joanne Mazarella

Joanne Mazarella is an abstract artist and painter living in Alexandria, Virginia. She uses a layered approach — working with acrylic paint, collage, and drawing materials — to bury and resurrect to build a history of the passing of time and record the shifting nature of shadows, energy, and emotions.

Inspired by nature, the urban environment, current events, and travel experiences, Joanne works with bold, loose marks, textures, and color to harness physical energy to find mental clarity and achieve exhilaration in the process. The work isn’t tidy and freely incorporates accidents, smudges, drips, and gestural marks along with more physical alterations of sanding, scraping, rubbing, and gouging.

 Joanne earned her Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts from George Washington University, and has studied at The Art League School, Robert Vander Zee Studio, and The Washington Studio School. She has exhibited locally at Kyo Gallery, The Atheneum, The Foundry Gallery, Gallery B, and The Art League of Alexandria.
